Motorized shades are a must for large California windows, and Greg Amato at Bay Screens and Shades, Inc. has been installing them since 1985. Amato started out as a general and finish contractor, so we hear that he knows his way around a construction site and can add valuable insight towards the installation process. The majority of Bay Screens and Shades’ business is devoted to installation, but they also carry the entire lines of Hunter Douglas interior and exterior products and will install things like wood blinds for a modest fee. Additionally, Amato will sometimes repair broken motorized shade systems installed by other companies. However, there is a two-hour minimum charge for such repairs.
Bay Screens and Shades, Inc. has three installers and caters equally to the trade and to individuals on the West Side of Los Angeles. The motorization involves a walkthrough by Amato and a thorough estimate. On average, the motorized shade installation takes about a month (including the three weeks it takes for the products to arrive.) The total package can range from a few thousand to several hundred thousand dollars depending on the scope, but we hear Amato’s estimates are very fair. He notes that with a new construction it is a good idea to have the motorization mechanism installed before the drywall. Amato also frequently integrates with clients’ iPads and total home integration systems. His list of satisfied clients is a regular “who’s who” of Hollywood and includes Jennifer Lopez, Sylvester Stallone, Dustin Hoffman, Jerry Bruckheimer and Axl Rose.
